What Is CBT?
Introduced in 1990 to help reduce the very high accident rate among inexperienced riders, CBT is the starting point for all learner motorcyclists and moped riders. It’s not a test and there is no exam. It’s a fundamental training course which you are required to complete satisfactorily before riding on the road.
Course Structure
The CBT course syllabus includes 5 elements which must be completed in turn. Once your instructor is satisfied you have learned the necessary theory and demonstrated practical skills to a safe basic level, you may advance to the next part. This structure includes:
Course Structure
-
A: Introduction
-
B: Practical On-Site Training
-
C: Practical On-Site Riding
-
D: Practical On-Road Training
-
E: Practical On-Road Riding
The course takes between 6 and 8 hours.
Qualified Instructors
Training courses may only be run by Approved Training Bodies (ATBs). When you have successfully completed all 5 elements of the course, our DSA-accredited instructors will issue you with a Certificate of Completion of Training, (DL196) enabling you to ride on the road on a learner legal motorcycle.
Requirements
When attending for your course, you will need to dress appropriately (no jogging bottoms, trainers or steel toe cap boots), bring your UK licence with you (if it is the photo-card licence) and any glasses or contact lenses you normally wear.
Next Steps
CBT certificates are valid for two years. If after that time you still wish to ride as a learner, you will need to retake your CBT. However, most people should aim to pass the full motorcycle test even if they don’t want to ride a bigger motorcycle. Insurance is typically cheaper for a start and you won’t need to keep retaking CBT every 2 years.
If you decide to progress to a full bike license, you can apply for the DSA motorcycle theory test and go on to take the DSA practical tests.
